Challenge: drink one green smoothie for breakfast every day for 30 days
Start date: February 15, 2013

Day 1 – Pear Me with Greens:

  • 1 rib of celery
  • 1 pear
  • 1/2 frozen banana
  • 1/2 cup of cucumber
  • 1 handful of parsley
  • 1 cup of water or coconut water

Unfortunately, I didn’t have day 1’s smoothie on Feb 15 because I didn’t have ingredients to start. Instead, I had it for dinner on day 2. I didn’t enjoy it at all; it was a little too gunky for my taste.

Day 2 – Raspberry Kale Booster Smoothie:

  • 1 rib of celery
  • 1 frozen banana
  • ½ cup of raspberries or blueberries
  • 1 handful of kale
  • 1 cup of water or coconut Water

I used 1/2 cup of frozen blueberries and spinach (I didn’t have kale – not the season in Dubai!). I didn’t mind this smoothie, but not my favorite.

Day 3 – Lemon Ginger Green Smoothie

  • 1 rib of celery
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 cup of cucumber
  • ½ lemon, peeled
  • 1 inch piece of ginger
  • 1 cup of water or coconut water

This smoothie tasted much better than day 1 & 2, but still not thick enough to be called a smoothie. Next time, will add less water.

Day 4 – Warming Blueberry Ginger Smoothie:

  • 1 cup of frozen blueberries
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 handful of kale (or spinach or other greens)
  • 1 inch piece of ginger
  • 1 cup of almond milk, coconut milk, coconut water or spring water

I used spinach and coconut water. Still waiting for the yummy recipes..!

Day 5 – Lemon Lime Detox Smoothie:

  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 lime, peeled
  • ½ lemon, juice only
  • 2 oranges, juiced (if you put the whole orange in, your smoothie will be bitter)
  • 2 handfuls of Kale, Spinach or other greens

Just as I was about to lose hope, finally a good-tasting smoothie! Very delicious actually, one of my favorite green smoothies ever. I used spinach instead of kale and added chia seeds as well. Very refreshing and zesty.

Day 6 – Creamy Tropical Cleanse Smoothie:

  • 1 cup frozen or fresh pineapple
  • ¼ ripe avocado (should be soft but not mushy, green not brown.)
  • 1 inch piece of ginger
  • 2 handfuls of greens
  • 1 cup water or coconut water

Now we’re talking! This smoothie was absolutely delicious. I love avocado in my smoothies (thanks to Jason Vale!). Y.U.M.M.Y.

Day 7 – Green Apple Ginger Smoothie:

  • 1 apple, cored
  • 1 handful of spinach
  • 1 rib of celery
  • 1 tbsp. chia seeds
  • 1 inch piece of ginger
  • 1 cup of water of coconut water

This one didn’t go down very well. I actually struggled to keep it down, but managed to drink it.

Day 8 – Pineapple Cilantro Cleanse Smoothie

  • 1 cup of fresh or frozen pineapple
  • 1 handful of cilantro
  • 1 rib of celery
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 tbsp. chia or hemp seeds
  • 1 tsp. spirulina *optional (which I used!)

I loved this one! Also added 1 frozen banana.

Day 9 – Apple Blueberry Milkshake:

  • 2 handfuls of greens
  • 1 apple, cored
  • 1 cup frozen blueberries
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 cup almond milk, coconut milk or water

I juiced the apple instead of blending it with everything else. So, I didn’t need to add water. I’m not a big fan of anything else that isn’t cow milk. My taste buds and tummy loved this smoothie – it was TOO good. Could smell the cinnamon from a distance!!

Day 10 – Heavy Metal Detox Smoothie:

  • 1 small handful of cilantro
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 handful of greens
  • 1 inch piece of ginger
  • 1 tsp. spirulina *optional
  • 1 tbsp. hemp or chia seeds *optional
  • 1 cup coconut water or water

They don’t sell hemp products in Dubai, so I used chia seeds. For my handful of greens, I used spinach and parsley. For some reason, the blended ingredients only filled half the glass. The smoothie was super sweet. Could it be that I needed to add more greens so the sweetness of the banana would balance them out instead of overpowering the smoothie? Perhaps. Still not sure how I feel about this smoothie – didn’t “hate” it, but did not enjoy it.

  1. I love your honest opinions about the smoothies! Not trying to please anyone! That means when you like it so will most others! Keep up the great work!

  2. Thanks so much for the great recipes and commentary. So necessary when people are looking for recipes after their own first tries in this area! I noticed right away that I did not like cocoa in my smoothies, but I love ginger in them. And I hadn’t thought of using celery, but now I will try it. And I will also try cinnamon and apple because my hubby’s first comment was “it smells like grass” LOL. Smell is so important when you’re approaching food. Thanks again, we both love the effects of green smoothies, so much energy and good feelings afterward, but we don’t want to have to choke it down to get benefits.
